Happy Chuseok to all our Korean families! We are thankful for you!
From the Secondary Principal’s Desk
Dear BAIS Community,
The students and teachers have already completed more than 10% of the school year! At the first chapel, it was exciting to hand out awards from second semester of last year and from various competitions our students successfully competed in over the summer. Additionally, it seems the 45 new students at BAIS this year have settled in well, made friends, and are successfully learning in the classrooms! The school recently received our AP score reports and there is much to be excited about! For BAIS, AP exams are the culmination of years of study. Every time curriculum is reviewed, we begin with the AP courses and work backwards to ensure elementary, middle, and high school classes are leading to success in the AP course and on the AP exam. The highest a student can score on AP exams is a five. A passing score, meaning the student usually can earn college credit, is a score of three or better.
- BAIS students taking the English Language & Composition exam scored .78 points higher than the global average.
- In total, 89% of BAIS students scored a 3 or higher on their exams
- The global average of students scoring a 3 or higher on their exams was 73%.
- BAIS students taking the US History exam scored .45 points higher than the global average.
- One hundred percent of BAIS students scored a 3 or higher in all the science exams.
One change from CollegeBoard Advanced Placement this year is related to exam ordering. All AP students are required to submit their order during the month October. This is a huge change because in the past students could wait until March or even April to finalize their exam order. I will communicate all exam-ordering details very soon.
Congratulations to all our AP students and their teachers for the hard work, dedication, a nd perseverance demonstrated to earn high marks during the 2019 AP exam season. For the 19-20 school year BAIS currently offers AP Art, AP Calculus AB, AP Chinese Language & Culture, AP Biology, AP English Literature & Composition, AP Music Theory, AP United States History, and AP World History.
If you have questions about AP courses and exams, please contact the course teacher, Ms. Hall, or myself. We are here to help!

WWDWWD: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO?
Why does BAIS complete MAP testing?
MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress and BAIS administers these exams early in first semester and at the end of the second semester. The three testing areas are Reading, Language Usage, and Mathematics. There are myriad reasons why BAIS partners with The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) on these exams. The following list identifies a few of those reasons.
- Every student is able to identify their level of achievement at the beginning of the school year, compare scores from the end of the year, and see their growth. From their first semester results, students set achievement goals that drive their learning for the year.
- Teachers participate in two MAP Data Days to analyze individual student results and the collective results of the class to identify areas of celebration and areas of growth. They make decisions and modify curriculum leading to improved instruction in areas of growth.
- The school analyzes the data in order to identify potential topics for whole-school professional development.
Testing for first semester has just been completed! Thank you for ensuring your students were well-rested and well-fed for MAP testing this season!

Bandung Korean School
BAIS is excited to partner with a Korean Language School who will use a classroom every Saturday. Here is a brief description and contact information if you are interested in this program.
Bandung Korean School is a Saturday school, which teaches Korean students Korean Language so that they may develop the proficiency of their mother tongue. BKS has just moved from Setrasari Mall to Ruko Ratna Niaga in KBP. We study 3 hours every Saturday from 9 to 12. The tuition is only Rp800,000 per semester, as it is aided by Korean Association in Bandung. We are very grateful for the generosity of BAIS to share the classroom facility, as we have about 60 students at the moment. Thank you to all members of BAIS.
