We love physical education at BAIS because of the benefits that it has for our students. Moving and being active is so good for both student’s physical and mental health. It also teaches students things like grit and perseverance. Our PE teacher, Ms. Fulwood answered some questions about physical education and why she feels it’s important to our students.

What is the most important thing students learn in PE?
God has blessed our bodies to move. Even spiritually, God has called us to take care of our bodies and to honor it as a temple for Him. As it says in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” This verse not only points to how we ought to take care of our bodies spiritually but practically as well. An unhealthy body or mind can prevent or limit ourselves from being the best that we could be for God. Christ understood that value and paid a heavy price for it; it matters to God when we take serious care of our bodies spiritually, mentally, and physically. It is a spiritual discipline to maintain a good physical and healthy body that God has entrusted us to care for. And physical education helps students learn how to do that.

2- Why is it important to have PE and Health at BAIS?
Physical Education can help the students attain goals in whatever area they wish to achieve in life. I, personally, know it can! Students can learn how to set goals, stay confident, be creative, clear their head of stress and distractions, improve their cognitive reasoning, stay active, stick with their commitments and devotions, develop friendships, and most importantly maintaining their health to a good standard(s) throughout their entire life.

3- What is your favorite unit or sport to teach?
Most of my students know it is the Olympics, whether Winter or Summer, any sport. I have loved it since I was a child.

4- What is the most fun sporting activity you’ve attended or gotten to be a part of? (Ms. Fulwood loves sports and chose three!)
1) The NBA Playoffs and the finals in the 1990s with Jordan, the Chicago Bulls, and 50 other great basketball legends: I did not get to see them live but seeing it live on T.V. with everyone in my family was incredible and exciting
2) Any SuperBowl or American Football game (before 2017) whether at a friend’s house or my parent’s house. Always great conversations, food, excitement, laughter, and of course the best years of American Football.
3) The Junior Olympic Volleyball Club Team Championships (Mid-Atlantic), it was my Senior Year, and we won. It is the largest Tournament for the majority of the East Coast/ Mid Atlantic Region. We had only 6 players throughout the entire tournament and no subs. It was hard, extremely hard but fun and rewarding. We never gave up nor thought about how small our team was in comparison to the other teams. We knew we could do it. We knew we would need to play hard, stay mentally strong, and fight for every ball and every point, and it paid off!
