BAIS is a school that embraces diversity, which means that we have students from different backgrounds and experiences, and with that comes different expectations of what education should look like. As an American school, we use the recommended hours recognized by the Carnegie Foundation to determine the number of credits a class is worth, which is 120 hours per year. A recent report from the Stanford, Calif.-based Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching found that using this measurement for credit hours is still valuable and useful.
At BAIS, our classes in Grades 6-12 are 45 minutes long, and we aim to have 180 school days per year. This would mean that BAIS students would have 135 hours of class time, which is well above the recommended amount of hours needed to gain 1 Carnegie unit or credit. However, living in an intercultural school in a country with a lot of diversity can present some challenges in achieving 180 school days per year.
For instance, public holidays such as the Idul Fitri holiday can affect our school calendar. Therefore, while we aim for 180 school days, our primary goal is to ensure that we are well above the 120 hours mark every year. For the upcoming school year, we currently have 178 school days scheduled.
To be completely transparent, it’s important to note that students may miss approximately 15 days of class each year due to non-classroom activities such as chapel, Spiritual Emphasis Week (SEW), Week Without Walls (WWW), and other events such as the Indonesian Independence Day celebration. While these may not be traditional classroom activities, they are essential parts of our approach to providing a well-rounded education, as they provide students with authentic opportunities to apply what they have learned and to develop broader perspectives and understandings of the world around them.
Despite these non-classroom activities, our students would still experience 125 hours of class time next year, which is well above the recommended 120 hours for a Carnegie unit or credit. At BAIS, we firmly believe that a quality education encompasses more than just the number of hours spent studying a subject. Numerous studies have consistently shown that the most significant factors impacting student learning are the quality of instruction provided by teachers, student engagement, a strong foundation of prior knowledge and skills, student motivation, the learning environment, and parental involvement. To provide a truly transformative educational experience that equips our students for success in the world, we concentrate our efforts in these areas.

Be sure to congratulate Fallon when you see her around campus.
Also, please be praying for the other students in the senior class as they are in the process of applying or are waiting for the decisions to be announced.

BAIS will be participating in the ACSI Day of Prayer on Tuesday, February 28. As a school we know so much of the work we accomplish everyday with our students is fueled by prayer and we are grateful to take this day and direct ourselves toward God in prayer along with other ASCI schools around the world. Here is how we will celebrate this Day of Prayer at BAIS:
The BAIS Prayer Corner: On February 28th we will also be opening the BAIS Prayer Corner, a designated place for staff, parents and students to pray. The Prayer Corner will not be limited to the Day of Prayer, it will be open and accessible after February 28th anytime the BAIS campus is open. The BAIS prayer corner will be located inside the pool building to the left of the entrance. We plan to transform this area on our campus into an inviting place to pray.
Dear All,
As a reminder, in the BAIS parent student handbook on pages 12 and 13 (contagious diseases and determining Illness), students will be required to be absent and sent home if any of the symptoms/diseases listed are present.
The following diseases are contagious, and students (and families) will be required to be absent:
Students are required to be sent home immediately if they have these symptoms and symptoms must be absent from the child for at least 24 hours before returning to school:
For students who experience seasonal allergies, they may continue to attend classes, but if they experience any changes in symptoms, they must seek an assessment by a healthcare provider. As we are living in times of much medical alarm and uncertainty, BAIS asks that students with seasonal allergies provide a doctor’s note indicating these symptoms are non-communicable.
The purpose of this policy is to prevent the spread of illnesses to the other students. Please help us by reminding your students to:
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.
