From the Director’s Desk
Dear BAIS community,
As many of you know, December is a time of mixed feelings for us here at BAIS. All of the regular activities are a joy to see, but it is also the time when we learn which teachers will be leaving BAIS to pursue other things.
I hope you are able to join us for the Christmas Concert, which we will be having tonight. It will be a great time enjoying the talents of our students under the direction of our teachers, the following weeks, we will celebrate all that the students have learned with end of the semester exams. I know this is often viewed as a time of stress, but since learning is our main purpose, we rejoice in seeing the fruit of the students hard labor. Of course after those exams, we love the holiday season and the wonderful opportunity to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ during Christmas.
The opposite side of that coin is learning which teachers will not be returning next year.
Furlough teachers are Miss Arrington, Miss Ripley, Mr. and Mrs. Newell. These teachers will be taking a one year leave and return to BAIS for the 2018-2019 school year.
The following teachers will not be returning to BAIS next year:
- Miss Zhang has been accepted to a two year program at Trinity Western University in Canada.
- Mr. Rice has made a difficult decision, for reasons he wishes to keep private, to not return to BAIS next year.
And thus the reasons for the mixed feelings. We have much about which to rejoice, but we also will miss our friends and colleagues next year. Please pray for the events and decisions listed above. In addition, please pray for a strong finish for our students this semester and for BAIS as we enter the recruiting season.

COMPUTER CLASS ANNOUNCEMENT
Skype-a-Thon is an international celebration of learning, technology, and cross-cultural connections. BAIS has celebrated it all week! 
From November 28th to December 2nd, Ms. Penn’s technology and computer science classes used Skype to visit guest speakers, special places, and other classes all over the planet. We will share what we’ve learned, how far we’ve traveled (in virtual miles), and our favorite experiences soon.
The Hour of Code returns to BAIS from December 5th to the 11th this year. Coding will introduce many of our youngest learners to computer science. What will we code? There are so many options! Some classes will create games, stories, apps, and more with characters from our favorite games, like Minecraft, Frozen, and Disney Infinity, while others will program robots.
Parents, you are welcome to join us on these adventures. You can follow our adventure on social media with the hashtags #baisedu, #HourofCode, and #Skypeathon. We can always use helpful volunteers who also love to learn new things. Please contact me if you have any Skype-a-Thon or Hour of Code questions.

Elementary Update
In 1st – 5th Grade Friday Folders is a permission form for the “Face the Facts” competition. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate their growth and knowledge of mathematics facts that require quick recall.BAIS would love for 100% participation from students in 1st – 5th grade. For 1st – 2nd grade, the focus is on addition and subtraction. For 3rd – 5th grade, the focus is on multiplication and division.
The 1st and 2nd grade students are in one division, and the 3rd – 5th grade students are competing in a separate division. Thus, 1st grade students are not competing against 5th grade students. Students are mixed into small, multi-grade groups of about 8 students, and they compete trying to say the correct answer quickly to a math fact flashcard. After competing within their group for eight minutes, winners will advance to round two. Students who do not advance will continue working on flashcards and quietly observe the competition. Round two winners will advance to the finals, which is held on December 15 at 7:50A.M. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend!
All participants receive a certificate, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners receive an award certificate. Please return permission slips on Monday, December 5. Again, we would love to have 100% participation in the event to further emphasize the importance of quickly being able to recite addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. These skills are critical in order to be successful in secondary school.

Prayer Requests
Pray that our BAIS’thletes may successfully balance their athletic training and academics as they grow in their knowledge of God and make Him known through sports. Pray that our visiting teams feel the love of Christ through our hospitality and our relationships with one another. Pray for safety from injuries. Pray for all aspects of the athletic department as we step into this new season and the challenges it may bring.
