From the College Counselor
Phew! With the first university deadline on Friday, November 1st, at 11:59 pm, 25% of the senior class submitted applications for either Early Decision or Early Action to their first choice universities.
Those applications represent much more than the hours the students spent filling them out. It represents years of work; it shows their writing abilities, test scores, extra-curricular activities, and their passions. It shows how a student has invested in their education. It shows their achievements, both inside and outside the classroom. It explains what they are passionate about, whether sports, or art, or drama, debate club, volunteering to serve people… What an excellent way to reflect on the ways they have grown during their high school years!
I look forward to working with more seniors as they work through their applications throughout this school year. Depending on the country they are applying, seniors will be working on applications from now until June.
Next semester the 11th graders will begin researching and exploring universities, tech schools, art schools, Bible schools, or internships to apply to after their graduation in May of 2021. They will set personal deadlines and understand what is expected of them if they choose to apply to those schools or are interested in other adventures.
I thought that you might be interested in some facts and terminology as your student gets closer to this season:

Terminology for this admissions cycle includes:
Early Decision – The deadline is early November. Binding. If the student is accepted, the student MUST attend that school. All other applications to universities around the world must be withdrawn.
Early Action – The deadline is early November. Nonbinding. If the student is accepted, they can continue to apply to other schools.
Regular Decision – The deadline is early to mid-January.
Selective Admissions – Typically, universities with an acceptance rate below 50%
Highly-Selective Admissions – Typically, universities with an acceptance rate below 20%. Some as low at 5%

Eagle Living Opportunity or Earn a reduced-price ticket to BAIS’s production of Cinderella
If you are a 9-12th grader and would like to earn Eagle Living points or if you would like to earn a reduced-price ticket to the upcoming production of Cinderella, you can volunteer your time this Saturday from 2-4 to help paint sets. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Ms. Christensen at bethanychristensen@baisedu.org.
If you cannot volunteer this weekend, we will have other opportunities so please consider volunteering then.
Athletics & Club News
IISSAC Basketball
IISSAC Basketball Tryouts started Monday, Nov. 4. The 2019 IISSAC Girls’ Team include: Beltra Chong, Kyla Victoria, Rachel Nielsen, Karen Lee, Hayeon Jeong, Jinny Park, Emily Stanford, Sherin Chong, Petra Thomas, Mia Whitehurst, JuEun Song, Luana Yo, and Nana Kurniawan. Ms. Christensen and Ms. Hays have teamed up for a second year in a row! We are excited to have this dynamic duo back together! This season will be Ms. Christensen’s third year as head IISSAC basketball coach. She admits, “We are very excited to see what this season brings! We are happy to see a lot of returning faces along with some new middle schoolers! I am confident we will see lots of growth and grit from our team this year!”
The IISSAC tournament will be Feb. 21-23 at Surabaya. A 2juta down payment is due Nov. 22 to cover IISSAC costs.
After School Clubs and Activities
The Basketball Season Opener will be Thursday, Nov. 14. All community members and teachers are invited to play. The girls’ game will begin at 3:50. Boys will follow. Please come out and support our BAIS basketball teams.
There is a Young Tigers Invitational Saturday, Nov. 16. All elementary students are invited to join. The invitational is free for students in Young Tigers and 50.000Rp for others.
Season Two will start Nov. 18 and last until Feb. 21. Registration starts November 11. There will be no clubs Nov. 25-29; Dec. 19-Jan. 10.
BAIS will host a Swim Invitational on Saturday, November 23. Register for the meet at swim.baisedu.org/swim-meet/2019
We are looking for people interested in helping the Battle of the Books kids by participating in a friendly ‘Community vs. Student’ battle! Any adult in the community is welcome to join! This will be Dec. 3 from 3:45-4:45.

Why We Do What We Do?
Open House
The BAIS Open House will be on Saturday, November 16 from 9:00am-1:00pm. If you are available, please come and enjoy the BAIS facilities with your family. We will have guests on campus looking at the school considering to join us in the future. There will also be a seminar called “Understanding American Education.” One of our best features is is you – the students and families already attending our great school. Please come. Also, if you know a non-BAIS family with school aged children, invite them to attend!
