From the BAIS Director

“Expect the unexpected,” a popular quote often credited to author Oscar Wilde, could aptly describe the proper mindset to best navigate these uncertain times during this uncertain season. Just one year ago on August 19, 2019, BAIS hosted the Back-to-School Kick-Off and the official school year began on August 20. Here we are one year later, and life has changed dramatically. The school leadership decided in May to delay the start of school to August 24 hoping it would increase the likelihood that the school could open fully offline with all new teachers and staff in-country, for the benefit of our students and families. While this particular strategy did not produce the outcomes the school was hoping for, I am very proud of our students, parents, teachers, and staff for the way you have navigated uncharted waters, starting the school year online, culminating this week with a very successful start of the 2020-2021 school year!

School leadership has continued communication with Satuan Tugas Penanganan Covid-19, the Department of Health, the Department of Education, and the Ministry of Education. The school has submitted letters of application, reopening plans, and current photos of campus to demonstrate protocols and social distancing measures in place to safely reopen the school. Unfortunately, the school has not yet been granted permission to open.

I understand the challenges of last year’s two-week module format and the scheduled notifications sent to the community every two weeks. The school is now planning to provide an excellent online education indefinitely until we hear otherwise from the Ministry of Education. Our hope is that by making this longer-term decision, it will better assist our community in planning for the future. It also allows our teachers to provide clarity related to teaching, learning, and curriculum this semester.

This week of online learning, although not perfect, has been exceptional. I joined many Google Meets, particularly to see how the new sixth grade students were doing. I’m so proud of them. They are bold in questioning, quick to listen, risk-takers in their learning, and have successfully navigated the transition from one homeroom teacher in fifth grade last year to seven different teachers with different expectations, rules, and styles this school year. Mr. Cantrall and I have been able to witness first-hand the interactivity and effective pedagogy of our teachers. Ninth grade students have shared thoughts with each other about the Theory of Evolution facilitated by Mrs. Hiwale. Twelfth grade students are now getting into the mindset of apologetics. Student-led worldview discussions, grounded in humility, love, and kindness, were encouraging to witness. In elementary classes, students were listening attentively and following directions resulting in the creation of a cute craft. They have been eager to share insights and ask questions. They were engaged! There was also a lot of fun and laughter, which is a very important part of any classroom!

As we think about what our community expected this school year and the reality of having online learning happening now, it is tempting to become discouraged or even angry. When I find myself going down that train of thought, I continue to remind myself of Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not in your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will set your paths straight.” I might not understand all the good that is stemming from this season. My lack of understanding is okay! In the past, I have been consistently reminded that God is faithful, and I can trust His promises. I know he has good plans for me, our students, our parents, our teachers, our staff, and our community!

Fully alive,

Jeremy Thomas, MS. Ed.

Elementary Principal Welcome Letter

Dear BAIS Community,

My name is Neil Cantrall and I have the privilege of joining the BAIS staff this year as Elementary Principal. So far, I am thoroughly impressed with how professional and passionate our staff is, not only about learning and excellent teaching, but about living out their faith in God in the midst of uncertainty and trials.

Currently, my family and I are in Oregon, USA. We are still awaiting travel clearance from Indonesian immigration. Once our visas are fully approved, we will be on our way to Kota Baru. I am blessed to join the BAIS community alongside my wonderful wife and three boys, ages 5, 10, and 12. Prior to coming to BAIS, my family and I spent one year in Oregon on a partial furlough, while I focused on my EdD classes and taught part-time at a local university. Before that, we served in Lima, Peru for six years at our NICS school, during which time I served in roles as teacher, principal, and lastly director. I have worked in education since 2002, in both teaching and administrative roles.

I truly believe God has brought your children to our classrooms this year for a very important purpose. In facing challenges and overcoming obstacles together, we will see just how Fully Alive we are in our Lord.

I look forward to meeting you soon!

Neil Cantrall, M. Ed

Marketing in the midst of uncertainty…

Marketing Team 2020-2021

Today is a busy time for Marketing. Even though we are faced with the uncertainty of what the market or the economy is going to look like in the next few months, we will continue to make our school known in the Bandung area and throughout Indonesia. The past couple of years, we have had the opportunity to join an education fair at a local mall where we were able to connect and interact with people personally and had a great outcome of new students joining to our school. However, now with limited access to public places, we have to be more creative with our marketing strategies. Online businesses are booming and as people or parents are staying home, they are paying more attention to things online. Therefore, one of our marketing strategies is that we are going to push our name through social media channels such as Google Ads, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other channels. We also want to partner with our current parents to put our BAIS name out there through word of mouth. This seems to be effective because of the trust we have built with our friends and family.

There are a couple of things we’d love for you to help us with! First, be sure to follow BAIS on Instagram (@baisedu) and Facebook. Second, tag us in your pictures about school and/or add our hashtags: #baisedu #baisedu2020. Third, we’d love to share your child(ren)’s accomplishments this summer and throughout the year. We want to celebrate them and post it on our social media channels. Please email pictures or information about these events to kaylynjulian@baisedu.org or hani@baisedu.org. Thanks so much!

Here is a picture of the marketing team this year. And here is a little trivia for you, who can guess the names of the marketing team members? The first 10 parents or students who can guess who we are, will receive one free BAIS mask. Send your answer to WA +62 812-1448-1338

IISSAC Update

Unfortunately it is unlikely that BAIS will participate in or host a fall IISSAC Soccer season. Taking into consideration the real and perceived danger in this region and all of Indonesia, the member schools of IISSAC have been unable to create a stable, feasible plan.

Our campus pool, basketball court, soccer field, and playground are open and are longing to be used by students. Students and families can reserve the facilities through Ibu Mega. Reservations for the library have expanded to Monday-Friday. All students are highly encouraged to remain active and to continue practicing their designated sports. Get out into the sun, get your heartrate up, and play with your friends. There is a myriad of educational research that affirms the connection between physical activity and improved academic achievement. The CDC advocates, “…physical activity can have an impact on cognitive skills and attitudes and academic behavior, all of which are important components of improved academic performance. These include enhanced concentration and attention as well as improved classroom behavior” (CDC, 2010).

After School & Elementary Clubs/Activities

BAIS is unable to offer After School Clubs and Activities this season. We hope to begin season two in the beginning of November.

BAIS Theme 2020-2021

This year’s theme at BAIS is Fully Alive. In a world that is gripped with fear and uncertainty it reminds us of the amazing promise found in John 10:10. “The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy but I (Jesus) have come to give you life and life to the fullest.” Our prayer is that this year’s theme will remind all of us that this world and its circumstances cannot steal our faith, joy, and peace because in Christ we are not just alive, we are Fully Alive!

Technology Acceptable Use Policy

In order to make sure that all technology equipment at BAIS is utilized in a careful and consistent way, we are asking that all parents and students (3rd grade and up) read and sign an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) at the beginning of each school year. Please go over the AUP Google document with your student(s) to ensure that they understand what is expected of them when using school computers or other technology at BAIS.

If you have more than one student at the school, please complete a separate form for each child. Link to the Google Form: BAIS Technology Acceptable Use Policy

Please fill this form out by August 28, 2020.

Thank you,

Clinic Update

Dear All,

Many thanks to all parents, students and staff during the “back to school kick off” for learning and following our new health protocols. There are three important things to remember about our new health protocol:

Wear face protecting / mask

Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water or apply hand sanitizer

Physical distancing (at least 2 meters away)

Please remind yourself and others to do this when you are on campus. Before summer break I distributed The Annual Health Record to all elementary students. Please return it to the BAIS Clinic or you can email me (maykerosalina@baisedu.org) along with updated proof of vaccinations.

Thank you.

Dr. Mayke

Fine Arts Dept – DRAMA

Hi Everyone,

So, as you know we cannot meet on campus for after school activities for the next two months. We still want to use that time to prepare for our production, but we are going to have to do this primarily online. We will still have practices on Wednesdays, but they will go from 4:30-5:30. We will start with the song of the week. Mrs. Loewen will attach a Google Meeting link to the word “songs” so that you can join practice each week. She will go over the parts for each song and you will get a chance to ask her questions; however, you are going to have to practice and learn your song at home on your own. You should set aside time each week (at least an hour) to practice lines and songs.

After Mrs. Loewen is finished with going over the songs, if you are not a performer, your official drama practice is over. (You should spend time at home practicing though.) I will work with the performers on line delivery and characterization for the rest of the practice time. Please have your lines memorized before you come to practice.

If we can start meeting on campus in November, we will continue with this rehearsal schedule. I have not created the updated schedule for the 2nd Semester because I want to wait to see what happens with the Covid-19 restrictions. However, I hope and plan on being in person for blocking and choreography starting in January. That means that anyone who does not know lines or songs — lyrics and parts — will be dropped from the play. We will NOT have time to let people learn their lines and parts. You have to practice at home each week. Remember, there are a lot of people who would love to have a speaking part in this play.
