What is the Advanced Placement (AP) program?

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program at BAIS provides motivated students with the opportunity to engage in challenging, university-level coursework while still in high school. These courses encourage students to examine complex ideas, develop strong analytical thinking, and demonstrate understanding through meaningful assessments.

Because AP courses require advanced reading, writing, and reasoning, BAIS intentionally supports students in developing the academic English skills needed for rigorous university study.

Through AP courses, students strengthen discipline, intellectual curiosity, and perseverance while preparing for the expectations of global universities.

Why take AP Courses?

According to research, students who take AP courses, regardless of their exam score, are better prepared for college than their peers. AP courses also allow students to:

  • Explore Areas of Interest: Students can learn more deeply about a subject they love or explore a new subject they are curious about. Unlike IB, students can pick and choose any number of AP courses to take. Through the Capstone program, students are able to choose and research issues or topics that they personally care or want to learn more about. 
  • Develop Skills: Taking AP courses helps students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, time management, and advanced scholarly writing, which are crucial for success in college and beyond.
  • Earn Credit for College: Successful performance on AP exams can earn students college credit, allowing them to potentially graduate early or lighten their course load in college, which can save both time and money.

What is the AP Capstone Program?

The AP Capstone diploma program is a two year program that consists of two courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. This program focuses on developing students’ research, analysis, evidence-based argumentation, collaboration, writing, and presentation skills, rather than specific subject content. Upon completing the two-year program, students can earn either the AP Capstone Diploma or the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, both highly regarded by colleges worldwide for demonstrating advanced academic readiness and skill proficiency.

Students can earn the AP Capstone Diploma or the AP Seminar and Research Certificate:

  • Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four other AP exams receive the AP Capstone Diploma.
  • Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research but not on four other exams receive the AP Seminar and Research certificate.
