Learning Support
Purpose
Learning Support at BAIS strives to identify and provide strategies to support students with neurodivergent needs. By working collaboratively with teachers and families, the program ensures a well-rounded approach to support students both at school and at home. The goal is to help students succeed academically while celebrating their unique strengths.
Program
Learning Support offers a range of strategies, from small group interventions to pull-out sessions, all organized so students do not miss new learning opportunities. Dyslexia therapy is available depending on space, and other neurodivergent needs, such as ADHD, are also addressed. Each student in the Response-To-Intervention (RTI) program has an individualized plan designed to help them thrive.
Research
Research indicates that early and targeted interventions can significantly improve the academic performance and confidence of students with neurodivergent needs. BAIS’s Learning Support program integrates evidence-based methods to address students’ challenges while focusing on their strengths, creating a balanced approach to learning and growth.
English Language Development
Purpose
The ELD (English Language Development) program at BAIS is designed for English Language Learners who are still developing their language skills and increasing their proficiency. The goal is to prepare students for the high level of academic English they will encounter in their classes, ensuring they have the tools to succeed in all areas of their education.
Program
Placement in the ELD program is determined by relevant data, including the student’s scores on the standardized WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) English Proficiency test. The program focuses on developing students’ Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills, while emphasizing grammar, spelling, punctuation, and accurate pronunciation. Additionally, students are given frequent practice with grade-level vocabulary related to core classroom content, current affairs, and topics of interest.
Research
Studies show that learning to read and write proficiently in a second language typically takes 5-7 years. Based on this research, BAIS ensures that students remain in the ELD program until they have acquired the necessary English language skills to fully participate in their various classes, helping them achieve long-term academic success.
