From the Secondary Principal’s Desk

On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the Asian Games medal round for mens and womens volleyball. It was a great day watching some of Asia’s best athletes compete and I was proud of how well the games were hosted ‐ both in Jakarta and in Bandung at the Jalak Harupat stadium. Indonesia performed well in the games winning almost 100 medals! And, wow, South Korea won gold in mens soccer! It was great to see our Korean community all gather together to watch the games at the stadium or at various houses in KBP and Bandung. These types of international gatherings of unity and competition remind me a great deal of our BAIS community. In fact, the PACE group, just held their first meeting of the year and the opportunity was seized to strengthen our community regardless of our home cultures and heart languages. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and participate ‐ especially our PACE leaders, Deborah and Fifi.

One of the topics that PACE discussed was how parents can get involved in spiritual life on campus. I would like to highlight that parents are always welcome to attend our uplifting chapel services. Elementary chapels are on every Tuesday beginning at 8:33, when the bell rings. Secondary chapels are biweekly on Thursdays and it rotates during 1st (7:45), 3rd (9:33), or 7th (1:01) periods. If parents wish to get involved (I’ve heard rumors of a parent‐led praise team!), please contact Mr. Whitehurst for more details via jasonwhitehurst@baisedu.org. Again, we would love for parents to join us during chapel!

We are also gathering feedback related to the lunch program. One of the adjustments secondary students will notice on Monday is unlimited rice! When students have finished all of the food from their lunch containers, they may go back to the MPR for more rice. For students who tend to eat more, we hope this option will satisfy.

Monday is the final official day for MAP testing. Our students and teachers have worked hard over the six days of testing to ensure best possible performance on the three tests: reading, mathematics, and language usage. Your student’s results will be sent home at the end of September so please be on the lookout. Thank you for ensuring all of our students were well‐rested and well‐fed for the testing. Any students who missed a test or did not finish will be contacted by Ms. Hall to get everyone finished.

Lastly for this week, it is highlighted that BAIS is a testing center for the SAT and ACT tests, taken by 11th and 12th graders. We are privileged and blessed that our students can take these university admissions tests on campus and in classrooms that are familiar. The more stress students face during high stakes exams, the less likely they will do their best. BAIS students have an advantage because they have a personal college counselor, are able to register online through CollegeBoard for the exams, and they can take the exams on campus with a supervisor who is a teacher here.
