From the Secondary Principal’s Desk

Five years ago I had the privilege of hosting Libby Stephens at Gyeonggi Suwon International School where she led sessions for our students, teachers, and parents. Libby is a cross-cultural transition consultant who specializes in Third Culture Kids – their unique talents and challenges they face. This is where I was first introduced to the RAFT-ing process to facilitate transitioning well. Often many think this RAFT-ing process if for those students, teachers, and families who are leaving BAIS; however, the process is just as important for everyone who is staying at BAIS as well. We all need to do our part to guide our kids and community to transition well – even if we are staying put.

R – Reconciliation – Asking for forgiveness, offering forgiveness to others, and seeking to part ways with everyone on good terms.

A – Affirmation – Tell those special people in your life thank you and express sincere appreciation for the important ways they served you, guided you, mentored you, and loved you while here.

F – Farewells – Take time to say proper goodbyes to people. This needs to start early. It is not only important to say goodbye to people but also to special places, memories, and even pets.

T – Think destination – For those staying, this is a little tricky. For those who stay in the community, one way to do this is by making practical plans to stay in touch with those who leave and by also being proactive in welcoming newcomers to the community.

I encourage us all to be intentional in this area in order to improve the health of our community and to provide processing opportunities for our wonderful third-culture kids. The long term benefits of this process increase the chances that our students will transition more successfully to university as well.

As we think about transition there are two events I would like to highlight that are coming up. The first is related to our amazing grade 5 students who will soon transition to the secondary school! There will be a parent information session on Monday, May 21, from 2:00-3:00. For grade 5 students, BAIS will facilitate a “move-up day” on Friday, May 25, where they will get to shadow some classes in the afternoon and get to know a little bit more about how things run upstairs. The second event to highlight is the high school course registration information session. This will be for all students and parents of grade 8 – grade 11 and will be Wednesday, May 16 from 4:00-6:00. The goal for this session is to create or update students’ high school plan and to share information about courses, diplomas, and the Advanced Placement options students will have in the coming years.

The end of the year is near! Let’s finish strongly and transition well regardless of whether we are staying or going. I look forward to seeing many of you at all of our end-of-year events. It’s an exciting time of celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of our students and community.

Blessings,
Mr. Thomas, MS.Ed.
